How much soil or dirt you actually need

The formula behind this calculator is the same one behind any volume estimate: area multiplied by depth gives a volume, and dividing that volume by 27 converts cubic feet into cubic yards, which is how soil is priced and delivered in the United States. A 100 square foot bed at 6 inches of garden soil works out to 100 times 0.5 feet, or 50 cubic feet, which is 1.85 cubic yards. The only real skill in the calculation is measuring the area correctly, particularly when a yard has several beds of different shapes rather than one simple rectangle, which is why this calculator lets you add a separate area for each section and totals them for you.

Garden soil, a compost blend, or plain fill dirt

Garden soil and compost blends are lighter, aerated retail products with no equivalent government dataset behind them, so their weight range is anchored instead to the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service published bulk density reference for loam, worked out to roughly 1,000 to 1,500 pounds per cubic yard. Tons matter here because bulk soil delivery is commonly quoted by the ton rather than only by the yard, and 2,000 pounds makes one ton regardless of material, an exact conversion rather than an estimate.

Bags or bulk, and how the count is worked out

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so the bag count is that volume divided by the bag size, rounded up so you never come up short by half a bag. At a 1 cubic foot bag, one cubic yard is 27 bags; at 2 cubic feet, the same yard is 14 bags. The crossover point where bulk delivery starts to beat bags on both price and effort is around 3 cubic yards, which is already dozens of bags and, since soil is heavy, more weight than most people want to carry from a car in multiple trips. Below that threshold, bags are usually more practical even where bulk works out slightly cheaper per yard, since there is no minimum delivery to arrange.

Measuring an irregular bed or several beds at once

Break an irregular bed into simple shapes and add them as separate areas rather than forcing one measurement over an odd outline.
