How it works

Two materials, not one: why the grade actually matters
Decomposed granite is sold two structurally different ways, and a calculator that treats them as one "DG" density is answering the wrong question for half its users. Natural (loose) DG is screened granite fines with no binder: it compacts firm underfoot when rolled, but nothing holds the particles together at the edges, so it migrates into adjacent soil and loosens with weather and foot traffic over time. Kafka Granite, a long-established DG and crushed-stone supplier, describes standard DG as suited to "lower-traffic applications" for exactly this reason. Resin- or organic-binder-stabilized DG is the same fines pre-blended with a polymer or organic tackifier before it's spread and compacted. The binder swells and grips the surrounding particles, producing a surface Kafka describes as resisting "the erosive powers of weather or heavy traffic" without giving up permeability, and, per their own product literature, "eliminates the need for traditional edging due to improved cohesion." That is a real, load-bearing difference, not a marketing distinction, and it is why this calculator asks for a grade before it asks for a depth.
Why the depth default changes with what you're building
Kafka Granite's pathway-mix specifications set 3 inches of compacted DG as the recommended minimum for pedestrian use and 4 inches for vehicular use, the same two figures for both grades, since the grade difference is durability and edging, not surface thickness. The University of California's Master Gardener Program (UC ANR) gives a complementary rule of thumb for a basic gravel or DG path: 2 inches is a practical minimum, rising to 4 inches once flagstone or pavers are set into the surface, which is why this calculator defaults a patio deeper than a plain pathway. A dog run sees the same foot-traffic loading as a path, so it shares that default. Underneath the DG surface itself, Kafka specifies 4 to 6 inches of compacted road base for pedestrian applications and 8 to 12 inches for vehicular ones; this calculator sizes the DG surface layer you see and walk or drive on, the same way a topsoil or mulch calculator sizes a single layer, and treats the base course as a separate prep step rather than a second material to order.
Order more than you measured: DG compacts, too
The same physics that makes gravel tricky to order applies to DG: you measure the finished, compacted depth you want, but DG is sold and delivered loose. Weight doesn't change between those two states, only volume does, so this calculator works out the loose cubic yards a given compacted weight actually requires. For natural DG, that gap is real and sourced rather than assumed: Gravelshop.com lists loose decomposed granite (1/2" minus) at 2,410 lb per cubic yard, while GraniteCrete's own ordering convention for finished, compacted DG is 1.5 tons (3,000 lb) per cubic yard, a roughly 24% gain between loose and compacted volume. That figure isn't independently cited to anyone; it falls out of two real supplier numbers, and it happens to sit inside the 27 to 52% range Wisconsin DOT independently measured for comparable fine, dense-graded aggregate, which is a reassuring cross-check rather than a citation in itself.
Where the numbers come from, since no DOT study covers DG
Gravel and crushed stone have a DOT-grade primary source behind their density figures (Wisconsin DOT's aggregate research); decomposed granite does not. No state DOT or USDA dataset measures DG specifically, so the density figures on this page come from named, dated supplier and manufacturer documents instead, clearly labeled as such rather than dressed up as government data. The stabilized grade's compacted density, 1.59 tons per compacted cubic yard for the DG fraction, comes from GraniteCrete's July 2024 math sheet, which states a lab-tested (Modified Proctor) maximum dry density of 127.5 pcf for their DG-and-binder mix. That is one manufacturer's lab result for their own product, presented here as representative of resin- or binder-stabilized DG generally rather than an industry-wide average, because no broader study exists to average across.
Natural DG and a driveway: what the sourced material actually says
It is possible to lay natural DG at driveway depth (Kafka Granite's own 4-inch vehicular figure applies to both grades), but their broader product literature positions standard DG for foot traffic and stabilized DG for "pathways, driveways, and ballyard areas requiring increased durability and stability." Choosing natural DG for a driveway in this calculator surfaces that distinction as a warning rather than letting the number stand alone, because the mistake it prevents is a real one: natural DG under repeated vehicle loading ravels and requires re-compaction far sooner than the stabilized grade does.
What DG is actually good for
Beyond driveways, DG's two most common uses are pathways and patios, plus xeriscape ground cover. It packs to a "nearly solid surface" for foot traffic (UC ANR), drains freely, and reads as a warmer, more natural surface than poured concrete or pavers at a fraction of the cost and installation complexity, with no forms and no cure time. As a xeriscape ground cover it's valued for the same permeability plus its neutral, natural coloring, which is why it turns up so often in drought-tolerant planting design. A dog run is a smaller-scale version of the same pedestrian use case: DG stays cooler underfoot than gravel and drains well, though, like any loose or semi-loose surface, it still tracks some fines into a house the way any decorative aggregate does.

Why do I need to order more decomposed granite than my measurements say?
Because decomposed granite is sold loose but you measure the finished, compacted depth you want in the ground. Weight stays the same between those two states, but volume does not: the same material takes up more room loose than it does once rolled and compacted. For natural DG, real supplier figures put that gap at roughly 24 percent (loose density near 1.2 tons per cubic yard versus a compacted ordering convention of 1.5 tons per cubic yard), which lines up with the 27 to 52 percent range Wisconsin DOT independently measured for comparable fine, dense-graded aggregate. Order the compacted volume you measured and you will come up short.
Is decomposed granite good for a dog run?

What is the difference between decomposed granite and gravel?
Both are crushed aggregate that can compact under a roller, but decomposed granite is a finer, screened material (roughly 1/4 inch minus with fines) sold specifically as a walking-surface and hardscape material, in a natural and a resin-stabilized grade. Should I use decomposed granite or pea gravel?
Decomposed granite compacts into a near-solid, walkable surface, which is exactly what pea gravel does not do: pea gravel is rounded and stays loose, shifting underfoot, which makes it comfortable to look at but awkward to walk on for long stretches or to place furniture on. If you want a firm, low-maintenance walking surface, decomposed granite is the better fit; if you want a purely decorative, low-cost ground cover where firmness does not matter, pea gravel works and is covered by this site's Gravel Calculator.
Do I need landscape fabric under decomposed granite?
It's debated even among professionals. Fabric suppresses weeds growing up from below and keeps DG from mixing into the soil beneath it as long as it stays intact, but it does nothing to stop weed seeds that land on top of the DG itself from germinating. How much does decomposed granite cost?
This calculator won't give you a price, deliberately. Cost varies by region, grade, supplier and order size in a way that cannot be stated as one reliable figure the way a compacted density can. As a starting point for the conversation: resin- or binder-stabilized DG costs meaningfully more per yard than natural DG, since you are paying for the binder and the labor to mix and place it, in addition to the raw aggregate.
How many bags of decomposed granite do I need?
Calculate above and read it straight off the results. The panel converts your loose-yard total into a bag count using a standard half-cubic-foot bag, alongside the equivalent pickup-truck and dump-truck loads, so there is no separate conversion to do by hand.
Should I buy decomposed granite in bags or in bulk?
Bulk, past about 2 cubic yards. That is already more than 100 half-cubic-foot bags, which costs considerably more per yard than a bulk delivery and takes several trips to move in most vehicles. DG is typically sold in smaller, pricier decorative bags than utility gravel, so the bulk crossover point lands a little lower here than it does for a plain gravel project.
Does decomposed granite erode or wash away?

Does this calculator work in metric units?
Yes. Every measurement field accepts metric or imperial units and converts automatically, and the results show weight in kilograms and metric tons alongside US tons, and volume in cubic meters and liters alongside cubic yards. The densities behind the numbers are the same sourced figures either way; only the displayed units change.
What if my decomposed granite isn't a standard natural or stabilized grade?
The two grades on this page, natural and resin- or polymer-stabilized, cover the structural distinction that actually changes the math: binder or no binder. Regional colors (buff, gold, salt-and-pepper and similar names) and specific supplier product lines are cosmetic variations on one of those two grades rather than a third density category, so pick whichever of the two grades matches your product's binder status and use that grade's figures.
