Why this calculator will not just take your ZIP code

Plenty of sites offer a ZIP-code frost date lookup, and it is tempting to build the same thing. The problem is what sits behind it: NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information publish 1991-2020 Climate Normals, including probability-based frost dates, per weather station, not per ZIP code. Turning that into a ZIP lookup means deciding which station represents a given ZIP, which is genuinely ambiguous in hilly terrain, near a coastline, or in a large rural ZIP that might sit closer to three different stations at three different elevations. Get that station match wrong and the tool hands back a wrong date with the same confident formatting as a right one. This calculator asks for your two dates directly instead. If you already know them from experience, they are yours. If you do not, the calculator links straight to NOAA’s own climate normals tool, where you can pick your actual nearest station rather than trust an algorithm’s guess at it.

What "growing season length" actually means here

The frost-free growing season is simply the number of days between your last spring frost and your first fall frost - the stretch when tender plants are not at meaningful risk of frost damage. This calculator computes it as pure date subtraction once you enter both dates. It is worth being clear about what this number is not: it is not a guarantee. Frost dates published by NOAA and used by most gardeners are typically stated as a 50% probability date, meaning frost happens after the "last frost" date roughly half of the time in the historical record. A longer growing season simply means more calendar days are statistically on your side, not that frost cannot happen outside that window in a given year.
