Those are different jobs at different depths, so picking a type here sets a depth default that matches the work rather than one generic number for every use.

How it works
- Measure each area you are covering. An L shaped section is two rectangles, a ring is exactly that shape in the picker, and an area you already know the square footage of can be entered directly. Add a separate area for each section if you have more than one.

How much sand you actually need
Area multiplied by depth gives a volume, and dividing that volume by 27 converts cubic feet into cubic yards, which is how sand is priced and delivered. The number that changes most between sand projects is the depth: a paver bedding layer is a nominal 1 inch, a sandbox fill runs 4 to 6 inches, and a mortar setting bed is typically 1 to 3 inches. Using the wrong depth for the job, a bedding-layer depth under a sandbox or a sandbox depth under pavers, gives an answer that is technically correct arithmetic but wrong for what is actually being built, which is why this calculator sets a realistic depth default per sand type rather than one generic number.
Paver bedding sand and the one inch rule
The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute's installation standard calls for bedding sand screeded to a nominal 1 inch thickness, not exceeding 1.5 inches. Too thick and the sand displaces under foot and vehicle traffic, letting pavers sink unevenly; too thin and the pavers rock against the hard base underneath, chipping their edges. This is a narrower, more exact recommendation than most sand uses on this page, which is why the paver bedding sand type defaults tightly to 1 inch rather than a wide range.
What a cubic yard of sand weighs, and why tons matter here
A December 2023 Wisconsin Department of Transportation research report measured the loose, in place dry weight of sand-classified natural soil samples across the state at roughly 93 to 106 pounds per cubic foot, which is about 2,400 to 2,800 pounds per cubic yard, or 1.2 to 1.4 tons. Sand is dense enough that bulk suppliers commonly quote and deliver it by the ton rather than only by the yard, which is why this calculator shows tons alongside pounds and kilograms in the main result rather than as an afterthought. The actual weight climbs once the sand is wet, the same way it does for soil and topsoil.
Bags or bulk, and how the count is worked out
A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so the bag count is that volume divided by the bag size, rounded up so you never come up short. At the common 0.5 cubic foot, 50 pound bag, one cubic yard is 54 bags; at 1 cubic foot, the same yard is 27 bags. Sand is heavy enough per bag that bulk delivery starts to win on effort as much as price past a few cubic yards, the same 3 cubic yard crossover point used across BunnyCorner's other bulk material calculators.
What this calculator does not cover, and why
Pool filter sand is sized to a specific filter tank model's rated capacity, a manufacturer specification rather than a footprint and depth, so an area based answer would look precise while actually being unrelated to how that purchase is made; check the capacity plate on the filter tank or the manufacturer's manual instead. Aquarium substrate is a hobbyist tank calculation outside a landscaping and backyard-project tool's scope. Polymeric sand for filling paver joints is bought by joint coverage per bag, not by a uniform bed depth across the whole paved area, so a rule of thumb from the paver product's own coverage chart will serve better than forcing it through this calculator's area times depth model.
