Why a frustum, not a cylinder

A cylinder formula (area x height) assumes the pot is the same width top to bottom. Most nursery and decorative pots taper for practical reasons -- it makes them easier to stack and to release a rootball from -- so using a straight cylinder formula on a tapered pot overstates the true volume, sometimes by 20% or more on a steeply tapered pot. The frustum formula, V = (h/3)(A-top + A-bottom + sqrt(A-top x A-bottom)), is the exact closed-form volume for a tapered container with two parallel end-areas and straight sides. It is standard solid geometry, the same formula used for a truncated cone or pyramid, and it collapses back to a plain cylinder or box automatically when the top and bottom areas are equal -- which is why this calculator never needs to ask which formula to use.

Quarts and gallons, not cubic yards

Bagged potting soil is sold by the quart or gallon, never by the cubic yard the way bulk topsoil or mulch is -- a small pot might need less than a single quart. This calculator converts the computed volume to quarts and gallons using the exact US customary liquid-measure definitions (1 gallon = 231 cubic inches, 1 quart = a quarter gallon, per NIST Handbook 44). Some potting-soil brands print their bag size in dry quarts, a slightly larger unit (about 16% more per quart) used historically for produce and soil measure -- using the liquid-quart definition here keeps this calculator's numbers on the conservative side, so it won't tell you to buy fewer bags than a dry-quart label would suggest.

From volume to bags

Retail potting mix commonly comes in 8-quart and 16-quart bags for small container jobs, and 1-cubic-foot or 2-cubic-foot bags for bigger pots or multiple containers. There is no regulatory standard fixing these sizes -- they are simply what major brands like Miracle-Gro and Espoma commonly sell -- so treat the bag counts here as a shopping-list estimate and check your specific product's label. Each bag count is rounded up to a whole bag, since stores don't sell partial bags.

A note on soil settling and drainage

This calculator computes the pot's full internal volume up to the rim. In practice, growers usually leave an inch or two of headspace below the rim for watering, and potting mix settles somewhat after its first watering, so buying the exact computed volume can leave a container slightly under-filled after settling. Round up to the next full bag size shown above rather than buying the bare minimum.
