Square grid vs. triangular: why the pattern matters

A square grid plants in straight rows and columns, so every plant sits at the corner of a square. Triangular (also called offset or hexagonal) spacing shifts every other row sideways by half the spacing distance, so each plant is surrounded by six neighbors instead of four, packed as tightly as the minimum spacing allows. The row-to-row distance shrinks to spacing x sin(60 deg), about 86.6% of the original, which is why the same bed fits roughly 15.5% more plants without violating the recommended distance between any two plants. Nurseries and orchard growers use this pattern for exactly that reason -- it is not a marketing trick, it is the geometry of hexagonal packing.

Where the spacing numbers come from

The preset list uses in-row, on-center spacing from Clemson Cooperative Extension's Home & Garden Information Center vegetable planting chart. That chart also lists between-row spacing, which is typically wider than in-row spacing to leave room to walk and work the bed -- this calculator uses the tighter in-row number since that is what most gardeners mean by 'plant spacing,' and it is the number that determines how densely a bed can be planted using either pattern above.

When triangular spacing makes sense (and when it does not)

Triangular spacing works best for plants harvested as a block -- lettuce, spinach, carrots, beets, or any dense planting where you are not walking between individual rows. It works less well for anything that needs a clear row for cultivation, staking, or machine harvest, like tomatoes on cages or trellised cucumbers, where straight rows matter more than raw plant count. Both patterns assume a clean rectangular bed with no border, path, or irregular edge eating into the usable area. A round or L-shaped bed, a reserved edging row, or interplanting two crops in the same space will all change the real count. Round the result down slightly for an irregular bed, or measure the largest clean rectangle within it and plant the rest by eye.

Why does my spacing chart show two numbers, like 36 x 24?

The first number is usually between-row spacing and the second is in-row spacing -- for example, tomatoes at '36 x 24' means 36 inches between rows and 24 inches between plants within a row. This calculator's presets use the in-row number, since it's the tighter distance that determines total plant count.

Is closer spacing always better for yield?

No -- planting tighter than the recommended distance increases competition for light, water and nutrients, which can reduce individual plant size and yield even though plant count goes up. The spacing values above are extension-recommended minimums for healthy plants, not a floor to push below.
