How it works

  1. Measure each section you are seeding. An L shaped yard is two rectangles, and a bed you already know the square footage of can be entered directly. Add a separate area for each section rather than squaring off the whole yard as one rectangle.
  2. Pick your grass species and whether this is a new lawn or overseeding an existing one. The rate field updates to a sourced default the moment either changes, since overseeding needs noticeably less seed than establishing bare ground, and stays editable for your own site conditions.

Why seeding rate is a species question, not one number

A grass seed calculator that quotes a single "pounds per 1,000 square feet" figure is hiding a real and large difference between species. Penn State Extension’s turfgrass seed guidance puts turf-type tall fescue at 6 to 8 pounds per 1,000 square feet for a new lawn, compared with 2 to 3 pounds for Kentucky bluegrass, roughly triple the rate for a species with a much larger seed and fewer tillers per plant. Warm-season species run lighter again: Clemson Cooperative Extension’s factsheets put seeded bermudagrass and zoysiagrass at 1 to 2 pounds per 1,000 square feet, and centipedegrass, which has an unusually tiny seed, at a quarter to a half pound. Treating all grass seed as one product with one rate is the single most common reason people either run out mid-project or seed so thick that the young grass competes with itself for light and water.

New lawn versus overseeding: why the rate is different

Establishing a lawn from bare soil means every seed has to find open ground, germinate and grow with nothing already there to compete with or lean on, so the full establishment rate applies. Overseeding into an existing lawn is a different job: living turf already covers most of the area, and new seed only needs to fill the thin spots and bare patches between it, so a lower rate does the job without wasting seed on ground that is not actually bare. Penn State Extension’s own guidance shows this directly for perennial ryegrass, giving 3 to 5 pounds per 1,000 square feet for establishment against 2 to 5 pounds for renovation into recreational turf, a visibly lower range even though it is the same species and the same source. Where a species-specific overseeding figure is not separately published, this calculator applies that same documented principle, roughly halving the establishment rate, rather than presenting a guess as a measured number.

Cool-season versus warm-season grass, and why it matters here

Cool-season grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, perennial ryegrass and fine fescue grow best in spring and fall and dominate lawns from the transition zone north. Warm-season grasses such as bermudagrass, zoysiagrass and centipedegrass grow best in summer heat and dominate lawns through the Deep South and Southwest. The seeding rates are not just different numbers for the same kind of process, either: several warm-season lawns, zoysiagrass in particular, are more commonly established from sod, sprigs or plugs than from seed at all, and this calculator’s zoysiagrass entry specifically covers the seeded cultivars, such as Zenith, bred to make seeding practical. Picking the wrong season’s grass for a climate is a far more common and more costly mistake than getting the seeding rate slightly off, so species selection deserves at least as much attention as the math this tool runs.

What the seeding rate does not cover

A correct seeding rate assumes reasonable seed-to-soil contact, adequate moisture during germination and a prepared seedbed, none of which the rate itself can fix. Broadcasting the right number of pounds onto compacted, unprepared soil, or letting the top inch dry out during the two to three week germination window most cool-season species need, will produce a thin stand regardless of how precisely the rate was calculated. The number this calculator gives you is a starting quantity to buy, not a guarantee of a full lawn; site preparation and watering afterward do as much work as the seed itself.

For turf-type tall fescue at 6 to 8 lb per 1,000 sq ft, that works out to roughly 260 to 350 lb per acre. This calculator works directly in the area you enter, so for a large lot you can enter acres as the area unit and it converts automatically rather than requiring you to do that multiplication by hand.

How much seed do I need to overseed my lawn?

Less than a new lawn needs, because existing turf already covers most of the ground and new seed only has to fill the gaps.
