How it works

Why grass type changes the target

Cool-season and warm-season grasses are different plants with different water-use physiology, not just a regional label. University of Illinois Extension states that cool-season lawns such as Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue and perennial ryegrass need about 1 to 1.5 inches of water a week to maintain green color and active growth. Clemson Cooperative Extension HGIC covers the warm-season side - bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, St. Augustinegrass and centipedegrass - putting most species in a similar 1 to 1.5 inch weekly range, though centipede specifically gets by on closer to 1 inch, less than the other warm-season types, since it is bred for lower-input maintenance. Neither category is simply "less" or "more" thirsty across the board; the ranges genuinely overlap, which is why this calculator prefills a category default and leaves it editable for your specific species.

Why soil type decides the schedule, not just the total

The weekly total only tells half the story - how you deliver it matters just as much. Clemson HGIC’s guidance on watering frequency is direct: sandy soil holds the least water per application and drains fastest, so it needs the most frequent, lightest sessions of the three soil types, roughly three light sessions a week; clay soil holds the most water per application but absorbs it slowly, so a single deeper weekly session works better than splitting it up, since a second application before the soil has drained just runs off instead of soaking in; loam sits in the middle at two sessions a week. Watering a clay lawn on a sandy-soil schedule wastes water to runoff; watering a sandy lawn on a clay schedule leaves it under-watered between sessions.

Deep, infrequent watering and why it grows better roots

This is the reasoning behind splitting your weekly target into a handful of substantial sessions rather than a daily light sprinkle, even though the total water applied could be identical either way.

What this calculator is not: a sprinkler or drip system sizing tool

This tool deliberately stops at the schedule - inches per week, gallons for your area, and sessions per week - and does not convert that into sprinkler minutes or emitter counts, since those depend on equipment this tool has no information about.
