Landscape rock is not one product. It runs from 3/8" decorative chips up through 1-3" cobble to 6"+ boulders, and coverage per ton changes a lot across that range, because the gaps between pieces grow as the pieces do. This calculator uses a different, sourced density for each size class instead of one generic figure, and it treats boulders as what they actually are: individual placed stones, not a bed you spread by the ton.

Why one density is wrong for landscape rock
Most calculators in this category use a single density for "landscape rock," regardless of whether the rock is 3/8" pea-gravel-scale chips or 6" cobble. That is the single biggest accuracy gap in the category. Cross-referencing two independent, published landscape-supply coverage charts (MDI Rock and Southwest Landscaping Materials) shows coverage per ton dropping meaningfully once rock size passes about 1-1/2 inches, so a ton of fine decorative rock and a ton of large cobble simply do not cover the same ground at the same depth, because the void space between pieces grows with piece size. This calculator gives each size class listed above its own density range rather than one number for all of them.
Why the depth default changes with the size you pick
Depth is not just a look decision. MDI Rock, a landscape supply yard whose coverage chart this page draws on, states plainly that for larger rock the suggested depth "matches the rock size itself," meaning spread it too thin and individual pieces sit loose on the surface instead of settling into a stable bed. That is a different failure mode than gravel driveway compaction (this calculator does not model compaction at all, since decorative rock is raked level and never rolled), but it is real: fine decorative rock looks and performs fine at 2 inches, while 3-6 inch cobble wants 4-6 inches or it looks thin and shifts underfoot. Picking a size class pre-fills the depth that size needs; the field stays editable, and the calculator warns if you go shallower than that size typically wants.
Why boulders get a completely different calculation
A "tons per cubic yard" figure describes a bed of many stones with air gaps between them. A single boulder has none of those gaps, since it is one solid piece of rock. Running a boulder through the same bedding-coverage math a generic calculator uses for pea gravel would understate its weight substantially, and it also would not answer the actual question a boulder buyer has, which is "how much does this piece weigh," not "how much area does it cover." So boulder mode works differently: it treats the boulder as a sphere of the diameter you enter (real boulders are irregular, not true spheres, but this is the same simplification landscape suppliers use to ballpark weight from one measurement) and multiplies that volume by SOLID rock density, using granite and limestone, the common landscape-boulder stone types, which average about 168.6 lb per cubic foot solid per a university geology course reference (Onasch, GEOL 615), rather than a loose bedding density. Weight scales with the cube of diameter, so it climbs fast: the quick-reference table below shows a 24-inch boulder at roughly 630 to 730 lb, but a 36-inch one, only half again as wide, already weighs a ton to 1.2 tons. It is solid stone, not a pile of gravel-sized pieces with air between them.
Tons or cubic yards, and why the answer is a range
Suppliers quote landscape rock by the ton in most of the United States, so this calculator leads with tons and shows cubic yards alongside. Both are ranges, not single numbers, because bulk density genuinely varies with moisture and with exactly how the individual pieces settle in the pile, and reporting one precise figure to two decimal places would invent a precision the material does not have. Order to the top of the range: the cost of a little extra rock is far less than the cost of a second delivery.
Getting it home
Rock is heavy for its volume, so bags run out of practicality faster than mulch or soil does; a half-cubic-foot bag of most landscape rock weighs 60 to 90 lb. Past about three cubic yards, bulk delivery is almost always cheaper and less physical effort than buying by the bag. Boulders are a separate case: they are usually delivered and placed with equipment rather than handled by hand, since most single pieces over a couple hundred pounds are beyond what one or two people should lift safely.

What size landscape rock should I use?
Depends on the job. Fine chips (3/8"-3/4") suit small edged beds and areas near a house where loose material tracking matters. Screened decorative rock (3/4"-1 1/2") is the most common all-purpose size for beds and borders. Cobble (1 1/2"-3") and large cobble (3"-6") work better for dry creek beds, slopes and accent areas where a heavier, chunkier look is wanted and drifting matters less. Boulders (6"+) are placed individually as focal points, not spread as a bed at all, so this calculator has a separate mode for those.
How deep should landscape rock be?
It scales with the rock size, which is why this calculator's depth field pre-fills differently for each size class rather than defaulting to one number. That is a design decision, not a math one. This calculator will not tell you how many boulders look right in a bed, since that depends on the layout you want. What it will do is tell you how much each one weighs and what a given count will cost and weigh in total, once you have decided on a diameter and a count, so you can budget delivery and placement accurately.
Can I place a boulder myself?
Only a small one. This calculator's boulder mode exists partly to answer this safely: most single boulders over a couple hundred pounds are beyond what one or two people should lift by hand, and a boulder that size arrives and gets placed with equipment, not by hand. No, deliberately not. Landscape rock is decorative: it is raked level and never rolled or compacted the way a gravel driveway base is, so there is no loose-to-compacted volume gap to account for here.
