River rock is smooth, water-rounded stone sold by size class, from 3/8" decorative pebbles to 8" cobbles, and it is never compacted, it is raked level and left. This calculator works two ways: as a standard bed or border like any decorative stone, and as a dry creek bed, the single most common real river-rock project and one that generic calculators handle badly by forcing a channel into a rectangle. How it works
- Pick a mode: a standard bed or border (the usual shape picker), or a dry creek bed, measured as its length and the width at a typical point along it, since a channel tapers rather than staying one width.
- Choose the river rock size you are actually buying. Recommended depth pre-fills for that size and stays editable; bigger stone wants a deeper bed to sit stable and hide what is underneath.
- Read the tonnage to order. It is a range because bulk density is genuinely a range for loose, naturally rounded stone, cross-checked against a real supply yard rather than asserted from one source.

Why a dry creek bed is not a rectangle
A dry creek bed is the single most common real-world river-rock project, and it is a channel, not a box: it meanders, and its width usually changes along its length, wider through a natural low point and narrower where it feeds into a drain or downspout. A generic calculator only offers rectangles, circles and the odd triangle, so anyone building a creek bed has to guess an "average" rectangle by hand before they even open the tool, and most people either overestimate the width throughout or measure only the widest point and over-order. This calculator asks for the channel length and the average width directly, which is the honest way to size a shape that was never going to be pinned down to the inch anyway, and gives a straightforward note about using a representative width rather than the widest one.
Why depth changes with size, not density
The common shorthand, "bigger rock covers less ground per ton," is true, but the usual explanation (bigger stone is somehow a different density) does not hold up well. A single, reasonably uniform size class of naturally rounded, washed stone packs to roughly the same loose bulk density regardless of the stone's diameter; what actually changes with size is the depth a bed needs to look finished and stay in place. Spread 3/8" pebbles at 2 inches and they cover the ground evenly. Spread 3-8" cobble at that same 2 inches and individual pieces sit loose on top of bare fabric instead of forming a bed: it needs 5 to 6 inches to read as finished. Since coverage is area × depth × density, and this calculator holds density essentially constant across sizes (sourced range: 1.30 to 1.70 tons per cubic yard) while depth scales up with size, the real "less coverage for bigger stone" effect comes out through the mechanism that actually causes it, not from an invented per-size density table.
Why river rock is never compacted
Gravel driveways are built in rolled, compacted layers because the load has to be structural: a car has to sit on it without the surface migrating. River rock is decorative and drainage fill: it is raked level over prepared, often fabric-covered ground and left loose. There is no expansion factor, no lift-thickness rule, and no compacted-versus-loose volume gap to account for here, unlike this site’s Gravel Calculator. The number this calculator gives you is simply what you place, because what you place is what stays there.
Decorative or functional? Both use the same math, not the same rock
A dry creek bed can be pure landscaping, a visual dry-stream feature with no real water running through it, or it can genuinely carry storm runoff away from a downspout or a low, wet corner of the yard. This calculator’s tonnage math works for either case identically, but the size you should pick does not: a purely decorative bed can use whatever size looks right, while a channel that actually has to move water in a storm should lean toward the coarser end of the range, since undersized loose stone is exactly what washes downstream in the first heavy rain. This tool does not attempt engineered, velocity-based riprap sizing, that is a real civil-engineering discipline with its own DOT and stormwater-manual standards for a reason, and a residential dry creek bed rarely needs it. But if the channel is doing real drainage work rather than just looking like one, size generously and consider a licensed landscaper or drainage contractor for anything beyond light, occasional flow. Getting it home
River rock is heavy for its volume, more so than mulch or soil, so bagged stone stops being practical past a fairly small job. Past about three cubic yards, bulk delivery is almost always cheaper and less physical effort than carrying bags. If you are hauling it yourself, be careful: a half-ton pickup can carry roughly half a cubic yard of loose rock, about a third of a level bed, and river rock at 1.3-1.7 tons per cubic yard adds up to axle-rated weight fast. Load the front third of the bed and make more trips rather than filling it to the rails.

How do I calculate river rock for a dry creek bed?

Is river rock good for drainage?
It is the standard material for a visible, surface-level dry creek bed or swale that channels runoff away from a downspout or a low, wet spot in the yard, and its rounded shape drains freely since there are no fines to clog the gaps between pieces. For that kind of surface drainage, lean toward the coarser end of the size range so the stone resists being washed downstream in a storm. Should I put landscape fabric under river rock?
Most landscape-supply guidance recommends it, both for weed suppression and to keep the rock from working its way down into the soil over time, which is also why bigger sizes need a deeper bed: enough depth to fully hide the fabric underneath. How many bags of river rock do I need?
